We Are All Good People Here – Simon And Schuster

I’m not a big fan of “hot takes.” But sometimes I write stuff that’s about witnessing a particular moment, rather than shaping and crafting and rewriting something that I hope will have a bit more of shelf life. You’ll find these quick musings here.

So much going on in this pic of Sam, Gus & me with So much going on in this pic of Sam, Gus & me with nephews, Jack & Matthew at last night’s Atlanta United game. I especially love the tiny photobomber behind us.

Fun to get to pretend to be a hardy mom of three boys for an evening, ordering 30-count chicken nugget meals & such.

And then for a COMPLETELY different experience, I took my own mom to a concert my church put on this afternoon, during which the NDPC Community Choir plus the Atl Philharmonic Orchestra performed Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. The performance was just stunning.

Sam’s latest renovation, a 1930s 3/2 Lake Claire h Sam’s latest renovation, a 1930s 3/2 Lake Claire home, for sale now.

I always say that Sam doesn’t flip houses; he is a “Slow Turner,” meticulously returning Old Homes to their original beauty while adding modern touches such as open kitchens, energy efficient heating & cooling systems, & spray foam insulation (super efficient.)

For this Lake Claire house, he even refurbished & repurposed its original doors & brought the original light fixtures back to (safe) working order. Oh, and added a screen porch overlooking the lush backyard!

It blows my mind to realize I’m partnered w a man who can MAKE houses w his hands!!

Attended a rally at the State Capitol to demand th Attended a rally at the State Capitol to demand that the legislative session hold a special hearing on sensible gun reform, which the overwhelming majority of citizens support—from all ends of the political spectrum.

It was a somber, sad, powerful event. One woman spoke of having been shot six times by her husband when she tried to divorce him. What a bullet does to the body…what six bullets will do to the body. It’s hard to take in the material reality of the damage wrought, but it’s imperative to do so. These are not theoretical issues.

Often times when I go to rallies, there’s an air of festivity, a rallying of the troops, but not today. We are all exhausted, sad and DETERMINED. We are determined.

When the the brilliant @senator_elenaparent spoke, she pointed out that extreme, online, rightwing vitriol is immediately deployed at any elected Republican representative who dares to consider gun control. With great empathy she pointed out how truly terrifying (not to mention misogynistic) these voices are. Indeed, they are so intimidating & scary that they can keep some Republicans from acting, even if they personally believe in “common sense” measures.

The loudest voices on the Internet are a minority, but they can be so very intimidating. Because of this, it’s critical to let your reps know that you support gun control (universal background checks, smart locks for guns, banning of military style assault weapons) regardless of your party affiliation

The question on so many of our minds these days: Who’s going to be next? Who’s child? Who’s partner, friend, parent, loved one will die because of our truly unbalanced, minority - supported gun laws?

After the rally, I came home & staked the tomatoes & thinned the cilantro seeds. Because life is precious even when the laws we live under do not treat it as so.

Thanks to @clareschex for letting me know about the rally and my State House Rep, @beckyevansga for representing our district with such grace & integrity.

Ubiquitous, senseless gun violence, a specifically Ubiquitous, senseless gun violence, a specifically American phenomenon.

This particular incident occurred only a few miles from my house, leaving 3 souls in critical condition, another wounded, & took the life Amy St. Pierre, a woman whose kids went to the public elementary school about a mile away from me, where tons of kids from Gus’s preschool matriculated for kindergarten.

She was, by all accounts, extraordinarily kind & fully engaged in a rich, purposeful life. I got my newsletter from El Refugio this morning, an organization that I support that helps the families of detained immigrants. Turns out Amy was also an El Refugio supporter, one of countless kindnesses attributed to her by shocked, mourning friends.

A husband is now a widower, young children have lost their mom. And for what?

Constitutional carry is a failure & a disgrace @govkemp

As our mayor Andre Dickens says, other countries have mental illness, but not the endless proliferation of guns. They don’t have mass shootings. It’s the guns. It’s the guns. It’s the guns.

It’s been 20 years since I last visited Providence It’s been 20 years since I last visited Providence, RI, and 25 since I graduated from college there.

Such a time warp to finally return w my dear friend for life (and college housemate for 3 years), Katharine.

We are 47 but this weekend we visited our haunts from when we were 20, 21, 22…so glad to go through life w Katharine. And Providence feels so familiar: a little gritty, beautiful architecture, the very best food, and persistent, constantly overcast skies where it sporadically rains through out the day. We used to call it “misting.” As in, it’s misting again. Oh, Provi, you delivered all the memories. 🌦️☔️

Of course, in six years I’ll look back on a pic of Sam & me now and think, “We were babies!”

Precious, fleeting life. ❤️🧡💛💚💙

What a gift to be circled in love. There is noth What a gift to be circled in love.

There is nothing good about the death of a brother in the prime of his life, but my circle has been holding and supporting me so tenderly: from cards to meals to flowers to hugs to care.

Today, Linda from church dropped off this exquisite prayer shawl created by North Decatur Presbyterian’s “knit wits,” a prayer and knitting group (that also organizes rallies for racial & economic justice.)

The yarn of this shawl is so soft, the colors so beautiful. Immediately after receiving it, I wrapped the shawl around my shoulders and felt so embraced. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Loved, loved, loved getting to help Zoe Fishman la Loved, loved, loved getting to help Zoe Fishman launch her wonderful new novel, The Fun Widow’s Book Tour, at The Wrecking Bar, hosted by A Cappella Books. And wow, Zoe packed the house!

The book’s prose zips along, but suddenly you find yourself crying at its poignancy, then, moments later, laughing at Zoe’s incisive humor. Such a good book. Such a rich night celebrating it.

Please help me celebrate Zoe Fishman’s beautiful, Please help me celebrate Zoe Fishman’s beautiful, poignant new novel, The Fun Widow’s Book Tour, this Tuesday, March 14, 7pm, at The Wrecking Bar in Atlanta's L5P / Inman Park.

TFWBT draws from Zoe’s own experience losing her husband / best friend / co-parent to a brain aneurism when their two sons were very young.

In her novel, as in life, a young, heartbroken widow leans on her friends, her family, her wits, and her writing to cope.

The result is a funny, sad, truthful rendering of how to go on when the unthinkable happens.

It's such a good book, and I can't wait to talk with Zoe about it next Tuesday. To say it makes me think of my brother Eric, gone too soon from pancreatic cancer, is an understatement.

The event is hosted by A Cappella Books, free admission, cash bar. Please join us! There may be tears, but there will be laughter & joy as well.

My brother, Eric Myracle, died yesterday from panc My brother, Eric Myracle, died yesterday from pancreatic cancer. It was almost 3 months exactly from diagnosis to death, a shockingly short amount of time. He was 55, born to Ruth Campbell (my sweet mom) and Don Myracle, his sweet dad.

Eric was an excellent mechanical engineer, deliberate and precise in how he worked and how he spoke. He was an excellent, exacting baker, who could make the best chocolate cake ever, along with tiramisu so good it was requested by others for birthday presents.

The light of his life was his beloved wife, Joanie, a veterinarian who loved animals as much as he did. Their home in Decatur was full of furry souls, all rescue animals of some sort or another. When he was in home hospice, his animals stayed nearby, a four-legged vigil gathering tight.

The other two lights of his life were his sons, Matthew & Jack, 12 & nearly 14. Eric loved being their dad, watching them play sports, going to the beach with them, & going to their neighborhood pool, Venetian, where his boys could do flips off the board that took my breath away.

Sam & I joined Venetian last summer, after waiting for 8 years for a spot to open (!) and I’m so grateful I got that summer to see Eric in his happiest place, beer in hand, listening to music with Joanie, watching his kids’ flip & twirl through the air in those moments between leap and water.

So many of us are devastated by his sudden, unexpected death, including his dad, Don & stepmom, Sarah Lee, his other dad, Tim, our mother, Ruth, his sisters Eden, Lauren, & Mary Ellen, brothers Jim and Tim, and a host of loving in-laws, aunts, uncles, & cousins. Not to mention lifelong friends who knew him from his days at Trinity Elementary School & Westminster.

I take comfort in the deep contentment he found in family life, in a job he was good at and enjoyed, and in his many faithful animals. And I see glimpses of him often in the face of my son, and of course in the faces of his beloved boys.
